DHEA
DHEA is a naturally occurring hormone whose levels decline with age. DHEA is a significant
part of the anti-aging spectrum. Much has been written about it's beneficial
effects in strengthening the immune system, as well as for use by diabetic
patients to lower insulin requirements. People with Alzheimer's disease have
been found to have only about one-half the DHEA levels of normal people of
the same age, thus it appears that low levels may contribute to development
of Alzheimer's disease. DHEA has also been given as a treatment for obesity.
Dosage: These vary from as little as 25-50mg per day for life-extension to as
much as 1,000-2,000mg per day for diabetes or immune system treatment.
Precautions: While taking DHEA, clinical monitoring of hormone levels in the blood should be done
in order to know when youthful levels of DHEA have been re-established. DHEA use should be accompanied with antioxidants such as vitamin E or alpha lipoic acid.
